Because the long-awaited 2018 World Cup kicks off tomorrow, we thought we’d give you a quick guide of what to expect for it. So see below to find out which countries face off in the group stages, which country we think has the best squad, and see which countries some of the dwell staff have picked out to (hopefully) be crowned the winners!
As the squads for each country have been released, we’ve had a look through them. We’ve selected Spain as the country with the strongest looking squad, and here’s why!
- Spain won 3 successive major tournaments between 2008-2012, but after embarrassingly being knocked out in the 2014 group stages, and the defeat in 2016, they found themselves playing like a shadow of their former selves
- Not anymore! Spain haven’t lost a single game in their qualifiers, inflicting an embarrassing 3-0 defeat on the very team that knocked them out in 2016, Italy
- They have again found their groove playing the possession-based football for which they are renowned, and with a World Cup swansong for Iniesta, Spain have their best chance in 6 years to win a major tournament!
We’ve asked around the offices to see who they think will be titled the 2018 World Cup Winners, and how they’ll achieve it!
Brazil to beat Germany in a Kill Bill style revenge thriller
Brazil to beat Argentina and Messi to murder his own team-mates
Germany to beat Belgium with an infamous hand ball goal
England to win (on penalties, of course!)
Spain to beat France giving Iniesta the farewell he deserves
From the 8 above groups, the top 2 winners from each will then play off in the Round of 16. It will then go through to the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and the main stage itself, the 2018 World Cup Final. The Final will be held on Sunday 15th July so you’ll have a month of football to get stuck into before the Final takes place.
We hope you enjoyed the above guide. If you have any ideas for who you think will be crowned winner, or you want to let us know who you’ve tipped as the best squad, get in touch with us here @dwellstudent
