We might be moving into Summer but for the next few weeks, Winter is here all! Winter of course meaning the eighth and final season of the biggest show in the world, Game of Thrones, starts this weekend.

So before we all lose sleep and think up all kinds of excuses to stay in, trying to catch the episode as it airs at unacceptable hours, let’s recap one iconic moment each from the seasons gone.

*Disclaimer* If you are among the few who have made the truly confusing decision of not watching the show yet this is where you turn away and go catch up.

Picking just 7 moments from one season is hard enough, from the whole show is daunting. But here we go, here are our picks.

Season 1 : Ned Stark’s Death

Right, let’s set the tone early with this shocker. While those who have read the books seemed to know what was coming, they did a great job of letting the rest of us be lulled into a false sense of “they won’t, they can’t”. They did. They killed off Sean Bean! And with it Ned Stark, the character who had took an early lead in many viewers’ list of favourites.

Season 2 : Battle of Blackwater

This was a big one! After all the build-up from Stannis to attack King’s Landing throughout the season, this is where it ended. Unusually for GOT the whole episode is dedicated to this one location at the Battle of the Blackwater. Finally the Lannister army, commanded by acting Hand of the King Tyrion Lannister, defending the city.

Season 3 : The Red Wedding

Yup, this one you definitely heard about. And even when you know what’s about to happen, watching it play out is just as shocking still. As soon as the ‘Rains of Castamere’ started playing at the banquet you knew something was up and in the blink of an eye Robb, Catelyn and Talisa were all killed along with their banner men, the Greys had betrayed them.

Season 4 : The Purple Wedding

From red straight into a purple wedding. Admittedly the fans weren’t as sad and heartbroken about this one. King Joffrey who had by this point become one of the most hated characters on television, gets poisoned at his own wedding to Margaery. It leads to Tyrion being falsely accused and imprisoned by Cercei.

Season 5 : Battle of Hardhome

This one’s all about that epic, climactic battle between Jon Snow  vs the Night King’s army. The viewers got to see two separate bits of information that would be vital going forward. First that Jon was able to kill a White Walker with his Valerian steel sword and with one wave of his hand the Night King raised thousands of Wildlings from the dead with glowing blue eyes, evidently now part of his growing army.

Season 6 : Battle in the North

Jon Snow’s up for another battle, this time against Ramsay Bolton and his army, as they face off in a battle for control of Winterfell. The Bolton army defeats most of Jon’s force, mostly composed of Wildlings, but are overcome when Sansa Stark and Petyr Baelish arrive with the Knights of the Vale. The battle culminates in Ramsay’s defeat and capture.

Season 7 : The Spoils of War

Sticking with the general tone of violence on epic proportions, the highlight of season 7 was the battle between our Danny and Jaime. Daenerys leads a Dothraki attack on Jaime’s caravan, only for Drogon to be shot down with the Scorpion by Bronn. Last we see Jaime, he’s sinking in Blackwater Rush under the weight of his own armour after being tackled off his horse in Blackwater Rush by Bronn.
